Vidyarthi Sahayyak Samiti, Pune (VSS)

Vidyarthi Sahayyak Samiti (VSS)  is an organisation that has transformed the lives of thousands of students from rural areas. Vidyarthi Sahayaak Samiti is a registered charitable trust under Maharashtra Public Trust Act 1950 with Charity Commissioner Office, Pune, having Registration No. E-219 (Pune). Senior mathematician Dr. Achyutrao Apte, freedom fighter Haribhau Phatak, Smt. Sumitratai Kerkar and others started the work in 1955 with the objective of arranging lodging and boarding facilities at very affordable cost in Pune, for boys and girl  from economically weaker section, willing to work hard to achieve their goals. The mission started by arranging meals for 5 students in the families of local citizens. As the next step, arrangement for boarding was also made for them. Then, similar facilities were arranged for girls. Now, Samiti has Eight hostels in Pune and Aahilyanagar, where 1200 boys and girls enjoy these facilities. Apart from offering lodging and boarding facilities at concessional rates, more importance is accorded to personality development . Caste, creed, religion have no place in Samiti. Samiti operates on the three principles of cleanliness, equality and dignity of work.  Admission to hostels is given only to students from rural areas who are needy but promising.

Vision And Mission Of VSS :

  1.   To empower students from economically weaker sections by providing access to affordable accommodation and resources for higher education.
  2.   To create a nurturing environment that supports academic excellence, personal development, and self-reliance.
  3.   To uphold values of cleanliness, equality, and dignity of labor in every aspect of student life.
  4.   To foster a sense of social responsibility among students and encourage them to contribute to society.              
  5.   To provide affordable lodging and boarding facilities to economically disadvantaged students pursuing higher education in the city.
  6. To offer holistic skill and character building programs that enhance communication, leadership, and life skills.
  7. To facilitate mentorship, guidance, and career support for students to help them achieve their academic and professional goals.

Samiti’s operations are managed by the Board of Trustees, the Board of Advisors and a group of volunteers, known as Karyakartas. They include eminent members of the society, heads of colleges and educational institutions and experts from various fields.
